About the film
The deeply religious and conservative Romanian-Norwegian Gheorghiu family moves to a small community in a remote fjord in Norway. Despite raising their five children according to biblical values, the couple builds a close bond with their new neighbours. But when teenager Elia Gheorghiu appears at school one day with bruises, alarm bells start ringing and the village community turns against the parents' traditional upbringing.
Mungiu wrote the story after years of research into real cases where families and institutions clashed over education and values. He does not take sides. "It would be a great flaw for me if Fjord just confirms to you the ideas that you already had before watching it," he writes.
Fjord is Mungiu's first film in a foreign language. Four languages are spoken: Norwegian, Romanian, English and Swedish. Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve play the leading roles.
Recognition
Fjord premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2026, where it won the Palme d'Or and the FIPRESCI Prize — Cristian Mungiu's second Palme d'Or after 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007). The film was an Official Selection at the Toronto International Film Festival and the San Sebastián International Film Festival, the opening film at Paff 2026, and Romania's official submission for the Academy Awards.
